Pirates remain perfect in playoff atmosphere

GEORGETOWN, Texas – It may just be the second week of action but the Robertson Center was as close to a playoff atmosphere as you can get as the Pirates remained perfect with a 3-0 win over East Texas Baptist and thrilling 3-2 win over Christopher Newport.

ETBU started the game strong, earning the first three points of the match, but it wasn't long before Southwestern exerted their dominance and easily took the first set 25-12. ETBU hung close in set two and three but the Pirates emerged with 25-19 wins to win the match in straight sets.

Christopher Newport came into the match on a mission and led most of the first set until Kate Mitchell served eight straight points and led SU to a 25-23 win. The Pirates kept rolling and led 20-12 in the second before going up 2-0 with a 25-14 set two win.

Southwestern seemingly had the game in hand, leading 6-0 in the third, but CNU refused to back down from the fight and pulled out a win in set three 25-23. With the wind out of their sails the Pirates couldn't find a rhythm as the Captains controlled the fourth set, winning 25-11.

The fifth set was thrilling for fans with 14 ties despite the shortened set. Brandi Campos' ace put SU up 20-19 and Kate Mitchell put the final nail in the coffin with a shot down the line for the game-winner.
