St. Catherine's Outlast Pirates at Home
GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern women's tennis team returned from spring break to face St. Catherine's in a dual match on Wednesday afternoon. SU fell just short of converting opportunities to wins and fell 9-0.
The score was not indicative of the match, however, as the Pirates competed well. Southwestern forced a tie breaker set in one doubles match and three of the five singles matches.
The duo of Victoria DeLeon and Kindall Hogenson found themselves in a back and forth match and forced a tie-breaker, but ultimately fell 8-6. Jessica Gaines and Aimee Blake (pictured) fell 8-3 in #1 doubles and Abigail Sedory and Virginia Stofer dropped #3 doubles 8-2.
SU regrouped and came out strong in singles matches. Blake (#3), Stofer (#5) and Kristina Krampitz (#6) all won their opening sets to take an early lead. Blake just narrowly dropped her second set 7-6 to move to the tie-breaker, but was beaten to the finish 10-8. Stofer dominated the first set, winning 6-2, but fortunes reversed as she dropped the second set 6-3. With momentum on their side, St. Catherine's Lorenzen was able to snatch the tie-breaker 10-4. Krampitz suffered a similar fate, winning the first set 3-6 before falling 6-3 and 10-4.
DeLeon (#1) and Hogenson lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively.
The Pirates turn their focus to conference opponents this weekend as they host Hendrix College on Sunday afternoon at 8:30 am.
