Women's Tennis Sweeps Weekend Matches
GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates allowed just one match point in three matches over the weekend, easily handling Schreiner 9-0 on Friday and Texas Lutheran 5-0 and LeTourneau 8-1 on Saturday.
Doubles action set the tone on Friday as Southwestern easily won 8-3, 8-0, 8-1. The momentum spilled over into singles action as all Pirates won in straight sets led by Sara Fitsimmons who didn't allow a single set point in her match against Abell in #5 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0. Fitzsimmons didn't lose a single point all day as she teamed up with Lali Satyavada to win 8-0 in #2 doubles.
In a shortened match on Saturday morning the Pirates picked up where they left off, dominating Texas Lutheran early. Jessica Gaines and Elyse Bigler took care of Davis/Davisson quickly 8-1 in #1 doubles and Aimee Blake and Fitzsimmons followed suit with an 8-2 win over Arizola/Flayer. After a #3 doubles forfeit SU sat up 3-0 once again heading in to singles action.
Kindall Hogenson made quick work of Castillo 6-0, 6-0 in #5 singles and Fitzsimmons recived a forfeit to hand the Pirates the 5-0 win.
LeTourneau put up more of a fight in the afternoon match but Southwestern rose to the challenge, once again winning all doubles matches 8-5, 8-3, 8-1.
Case snuck out a victory over Bigler in #1 singles, needing a tie breaker set win to get the only point of the day for LeTourneau, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8. Gaines went to a tie breaker set as well in her match after dropping the second set 2-6, but emerged with the win 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 over Hairell.
Satyavada and Blake dominated in #3 and #4 singles with Satyavada winning 6-0, 6-1 and Blake 6-1, 6-0. Fitzsimmons was challenged for the first time this weekend and stepped up to it, winning 4-6, 6-1, 10-5. Hogenson rounded out the 8-1 Pirate victory with a 6-3, 6-0 routing in #6 singles.
After the three wins over the weekend Southwestern improves to 4-3 this spring. They head into a break and return to action on March 24th at home to face St. Catherine.
