SOFTBALL LANDS THREE ON ALL-SCAC SECOND TEAM, FROBOESE NAMED CO-COACH-OF-THE-YEAR
SUWANEE, Ga. - With a post-season surge that earned the Southwestern softball team their first Conference Championship, the Pirates received three Second Team All-SCAC selections, three Honorable Mentions and Co-Coach-of-the-Year honors.
Head Coach Angela Froboese earned her second consecutive Coach-of-the-Year honors, this year sharing the award with Roland Rodriguez of Millsaps College. This is just the fourth time in SCAC history that a coach has received the honor in consecutive seasons. Coach Froboese has led Southwestern to the top in just their second year of existence as a program. They currently sit at 31-11 on the year and ended the regular season in second place in the SCAC West with a 10-4 record. After an amazing run through the loser's bracket the Pirates have earned the SCAC title and a trip to the NCAA Regionals to begin on May 13th.
Three players, Haley Hughes, Katelyn Gola, and Lyndsy Maus, were second team All-SCAC selections. Gola, the lone senior on the squad, easily handles a tough assignment defensively at third base as she leads the team in assists with 105, committing just 13 errors all season. She sits in ninth nationally in the Division III NCAA record books with 286 career assists.
Gola is not just sensational in the field but is third on the team with a .348 batting average, scoring a team high 36 times and stealing 16 bases.
Joining Gola is sophomore hurler Maus who leads the team with a 2.25 ERA while mounting a 16-5 record. She has struck out 100 batters and walked just 19 so far this season and holds opponents to a .237 batting average.
Newcomer first-baseman Haley Hughes rounds out the second team selections and deservedly so as she leads the combustible Pirates at the plate with a. 404 batting average. She has started all 42 games this season and is tops in almost every offensive category. She hit the game winning double in the first Championship game against Millsaps and then turned around with a three-run homerun to start off game two, setting the stage for the Pirates' first title.
Southwestern will learn their fate on May 10th as the NCAA announces match-ups and sites for the 2010 tournament to begin on May 13th. The Pirates know they are in Regional action but are unsure who and where they will be competing for the national title.
