PIRATES DROP OVERTIME HEARTBREAKER AT BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Southwestern University and the
Panthers alternated goals and were tied through regulation in
Sunday’s SCAC match-up, but BSC scored five minutes into
overtime to hand SU their third loss of the season, 3-2. The
Pirates fall to 7-3-1 while Birmingham-Southern improves to
Southwestern came out attacking and took the early lead thanks to an unassisted goal by sophomore Jillian Curran in the third minute. The 1-0 lead would hold until halftime thanks to senior keeper Cheryl Duncan and the Pirate defense that kept everything out of the net and the Panthers scoreless.
The second half was a different story as it took just three minutes for BSC to even the count with a goal by Menton. A free kick by Rice in the 61st minute put the Panthers on top momentarily, but Pirates’ sophomore Laura Ornelas (pictured) evened the score less than six minutes later with an unassisted goal. Regulation would end in a 2-2 tie, forcing SU into their second overtime match of the weekend.

Southwestern dominated the shots and corner kicks categories for the game. The Pirates had 20 shots to BSC’s 13 and took seven more corners (8-1) than the Panthers. Duncan recorded seven saves while Birmingham-Southern’s keepers had 11 total.
The Pirates will return to the field for a fall break match at home against Hardin-Simmons University on Tuesday at 3:00 pm before returning to conference home action over the weekend.
