Women's Golf Takes Third at SCAC Championships, Speck Second Overall

TUNICA, Miss. - The Southwestern women's golf team continued to get stronger throughout the SCAC Conference Tournament despite challenging weather conditions and finished in third place overall. Karissa Speck posted an All-SCAC team selection coming in second place overall.

The Pirates opened cautiously, getting their bearings on the course on day one and ended the day in fourth place overall with 334 strokes. Speck led with a 78, the third lowest score of any round on day one. Kelsey Coburn also posted a top ten finish, shooting an 82.

Day two it wasn't only the Pirates that got stronger but so did the wind, but the Pirates won that battle to move into third place overall. Speck bettered her score and shot a round-low 77 for the second round to move up to second place while Lauren Boone shot an 83 to move into a tie for 19th.

On the final day of action the Pirates shaved six strokes off of their round one score and 11 off of round two to finish in third place overall with 999 strokes. Speck's 79 on day three held her in second place, just six strokes behind winner Emily Bachert of Centre. Coburn returned to her strong play with a 79 on day three to move all the way up to a tie for eighth with 247 strokes. Lauren Boone came in tied for 21st with 255 strokes while Stephanie Scholer took 26th with 265 strokes. Katie McCance closed out the Pirate effort with 273 strokes and in 29th.

The third place finish at the SCAC Championships marks the end of the 2012 season for the Pirates.
