19 Season Bests Show Pirates Improvements at Southwest Shootout
The Pirates competed on Friday and Saturday at the Southwest Shootout. The Pirates swam against DI, DII, and DIII teams. The men finished in 9th place. The news of the meet was the astonishing 80% of season bests that were improved upon. All four relay teams swam their fastest times of the season at the Southwest Shootout.
In the Men's 200 yard freestyle, the team of John Prater, Josh Stanfield, Stephen Montes, and Patrick Flanagan finished with a time of 1:32.8. This earned them 13th place, earning them a spot in front of most SCAC schools. Stephen Montes was the top finisher for the Pirates in the 500 freestyle, finishing with a time of 5:11.47. He was closely followed by fellow Pirate Taylor Steele, who finished the event in 5:19.12. Montes also competed in the 200 IM and swam a 2:17.09. Patrick Flanagan earned another top 30 finish for the Pirates with his time of 23.08 in the men's 50 yard freestyle. However, John Prater led the way in the event for the Pirates with a time of 22.95, 22nd overall. Josh Stanfield also competed in the event and swam a 23.99, top 40 for the event. In the men's 400 yard medley relay, the Pirates placed 14th out of 24 teams with a time of 3:59.22. Flanagan, Prater, Adrian Gomez, and Stanfield teamed up in the 200 yard medley relay to finish with a time of 1:47.45, good enough for 13th place. In the 400 yard IM, Taylor Steele finished in 4:48.01, a season best. Flanagan earned another top 20 finish with a 59.80 in the 100 yard backstroke. John Prater earned 15th place in the 100 yard breast stroke with a time of 1:05.90. Montes was the top finisher for Souwthestern in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.75. He had Taylor Steele on his heels with a time of 1:56.99. Josh Stanfield finished 19th in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:13.11. John Prater missed a top 20 finish by less that a quarter of a second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 50.88. Patrick Flanagan finished with a time of 51.95, good enough for 35th. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, John Prater, Josh Stanfield, Stephen Montes, and Taylor Steele earned 12th with a time of 3:27.99. Stephen Montes placed in the top 20 in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 17:44.25. He was followed by Taylor Steele who finished in 18:25.89.
The Pirates will take to the water again December 4th in a conference meet against Austin College. The meet will be held in Georgetown, TX at 1PM.
