RICHARDSON, Texas - For the second night in a row the Pirate men's soccer team needed extra time to decide their non-conference match at the ASC/SCAC Round Robin hosted by the University of Texas Dallas. This time, however, the Pirates came out on top with a 4-3 win with three goals by Thomas Davis (pictured), including the game winner.
Hardin Simmons came out of the gate strong, scoring two goals in the opening 12 minutes to put Southwestern down 2-0. Davis got the Pirates rolling in the 28th minute with an unassisted goal from 30 yards out. First-year Garhett Bonneaux and Matt Harrison teamed up for the second goal of the afternoon to pull the Pirates even 2-2. Harrison crossed the ball in from the right side of the box to Bonneaux who put the ball in the back of the net.
The rest of the first half was quiet after a lively 33 minutes and the contest remained 2-2 at the break.
Davis put the Pirates on top, scoring the first goal of the second half in the 82nd minute, this time assisted by Matt Nickell. Nickell snuck the ball past the HSU defensive line to Davis who took advantage of the good look, giving SU a 3-2 lead with just over eight minutes to play.
Hardin-Simmons brought the count even less than three minutes later on a header by Tyler Murray. Regulation came to a close with the 3-3 tie intact.
Both teams had their opportunities in the first overtime, including a header by Davis that forced HSU keeper Sam Potter to make a great save. SU came out strong in the second overtime with three shots on frame but non found the back of the goal until the 108th minute. Timothy Eamma crossed the ball in from the left side of the box to find, who else but, Davis in front of goal for the game winner.
Southwestern dominated the offensive attack, taking 26 shots to the Cowboys' 10, but SU had no corner kick opportunities while HSU had just one.
The win improves SU to 2-2-1 on the year. They remain on the road to face the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday in Belton, TX at 5:00 pm.
