Alumni Return for Annual Competition
The Southwestern men's soccer team played the annual alumni game on Saturday afternoon at Southwestern University. The alumni, fan support, and weather were all fantastic. 30 alumni returned for the event. The current Pirates out-scored the alumni by one goal.
Over 100 spectators of family, friends, fans and potential future Pirates turned out to cheer on the past and present Pirate athletes in the first ever "Retro Match" on the Maple Steet fields with the splendor of the Cullen Building in the background. The spring match was started in 2005.
The game marked the end of the Pirates spring season, where they trained for two weeks to sharpen their skills and included a trip to El Salvador.
The final part of the alumni festivities was an Italian feast of Johnny Carrino's under the shade trees for alumni, current players and parents with the SU soccer parents doing an outstanding job of supplying desserts, drinks and sides. To conclude the day of soccer fun and fellowship the alumni players, all of whom have graduated, convened at Coach Gregory's house for stories and memories and to watch the USA/Argentina match from New Jersey.
