PIRATES LAND FIRST IN STATE COMMITMENT FOR BRAND NEW PROGRAM

March 26, 2009
Georgetown, Texas - Edward Williams, senior attack at St. John's High School in Houston, has committed to play for Coach Joe Ernst at Division III Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, just north of Austin.
A big presence on the field at 5’11” and 245 lbs, Williams lead his team in scoring his junior year with 49 goals for St. John’s, a perennial state playoff team with a tradition of sending players to DI and DIII programs.
Williams had been considering Denison and Skidmore among others before verbally committing to Southwestern. Several factors went into his decision including feeling honored to be the first recruit at the first varsity college lacrosse program in Texas. His high school team was the first lacrosse team in Texas where his father was a coach for many years, so it seems history is repeating itself.
He noted, “Having played for Select Teams, Champ Camp teams, and at Top 205 all in the east, it is amazing to be part of establishing a competitive program in my home state. I liked it up there, but you can’t beat being in Texas. This is a very attractive school for the better players both in and out of state. The Southwestern administration is really committed to this effort too.”
“Solid academics with a Business program, an enthusiastic and proven coach, as well as being close to home sealed the deal for me.” Williams added. “Friends and family can continue to see me play and the team grow. Not many players from Texas who can play on a varsity college program can say that….. until now. I’m looking forward to working hard and getting that first win for Southwestern.”
