Feb. 25, 2009
Despite out-hitting the Comets, Southwestern University fell to the University of Texas at Dallas on Tuesday 10-4.
The Pirates started off the game hot pushing four two-out runs across the plate and making their presence known in Richardson, TX. Senior second baseman Brent McMullen singled in between a pair of strike-outs to start the inning for SU. Sophomore first baseman Kyle Belski started the rally with a walk. Senior third baseman Mark Noggle had an RBI single to left field to drive in McMullen for the Pirates' first run. Junior right-fielder John Wooten followed with an RBI double to right center that drove in Belski. This brought up sophomore Nick Ashford with two outs and two runners in scoring position. Ashford delivered a 2 RBI shot to right center to bring in Wooten and Noggle for the third and fourth runs of the inning.
The Comets hit right back in the bottom of the inning and put six runs on the board on two hits and one Pirate error to regain the lead. In the fourth inning, two costly Pirate errors set the stage for a big inning for UTD. Two throwing errors combined with a pair of singles and a homerun gave the Comets four more runs and extend their lead to 10-4.
Freshman right-hander Aaron Garza received the loss for the Pirates. He went three innings and allowed three hits, two runs (two earned), walked three batters and struck out three.
Offensively, Wooten led going 2-4 on the day with 1 RBI and 1 run. Junior shortstop Matthew Clark also went 2-4 and Ashford had a strong day at the plate driving in 2 runs.
